Toaster is what everybody at SLOPPY'S calls the driverless electric trucks that now carry most of the country's freight. They are white, they are quiet, and nobody ever gets out.
At SLOPPY'S
Toasters charge at the stalls beside the diesel pumps. They pull in, they plug in, they leave. They do not buy coffee. They have the right of way at all times.
Visitors are asked not to touch the charging cables, stand in front of a toaster, or knock on the cab. There is nobody to answer.
Tradition
The first toaster charged at SLOPPY'S in 2027. It pulled into a regular's usual spot. The whole crew watched from the window. Joe walked out and set a cup of coffee on its step, out of habit. It drove off with the coffee still on the step. Some regulars still leave one, for luck.
Features
- A narrow black glass slit where a windshield would be.
- A sensor pod on the roof that turns slowly, all the time.
- A small white ring on the side panel. That's Amity. They all have it.
- Very polite. They signal, keep their distance, and never use the horn.
