SLOPPY'S Truck Stop is a truck stop at Exit 47. It has been open since 1994 and has been kept, inside and out, about the way it was then. It is the last stop for 300 miles that still sells diesel.

History

SLOPPY'S opened in 1994 with six pumps, a counter, a café and a drivers' lounge. For thirty years it was the best stop on the interstate: every pump working, every light on, the lot full by midnight. The owner is not often seen on the premises.[citation needed]

The trucks changed. The stop didn't.

The property

  • The pumps. Six diesel pumps under a long canopy. Two have handwritten OUT OF ORDER signs. Pump 4 is open.
  • The sign. The SLOPPY'S shield on a single pole, with the diesel price under it. The price has read 4.19 since 2026. It is not coming down.
  • The counter. Register, lottery, the cigarette wall, and Sue. The hot dog roller has its own counter across the aisle, next to the coffee.
  • The drivers' lounge. Recliners, a vending machine, a corkboard of DRIVERS WANTED flyers, and Joe.
  • The jukebox. Stocked in 1994. Never restocked. Every song on it is from 1994.
  • The freight office. Behind the counter. Bill runs dispatch from here.
  • The service bay. Dee's.
  • The charging stalls. Beside the old pumps, for the toasters.
  • The showers. Closed by federal water order.
  • The inside bathroom. Out of order.
  • The back lot. Closed to the public.

Local oddities

  • The clock in the freight office reads 3:12. Nobody has gotten around to it.
  • Around 3:12 a.m. every night, the lights dim for about a minute and the jukebox slows down. Regulars call it the bell.[citation needed]
  • The lot gets fog most nights. The sign can be seen through it.
