William "Bill" Pruett is a regular at SLOPPY'S Truck Stop. Regular since 1994. Usual seat by the window. Logs everything.

On the road

Bill is from Waycross, Georgia, and has been driving for thirty years. He will tell you his mileage if you ask, and sometimes if you don't. For most of those years he came through Exit 47 every week, fueled at pump 4, and took his coffee at the window. Sue poured it. He never had to ask.

At SLOPPY'S

These days Bill runs dispatch for the drivers out of the freight office behind the counter. He keeps paper logbooks going back to the 1990s and has never once missed an entry.[citation needed] If you need a load, a route, or a straight answer, Bill is the man to see. The answer will be straight.

He calls the driverless trucks "toasters". He does not mean it as a compliment.

Habits

  • Takes his coffee black, in the same mug.
  • Does not like to be interrupted. If he is, he picks up exactly where he left off, word for word, sometimes a full minute later.[citation needed]
  • Still asks after drivers who took the buyout years ago, and whether they're coming in tonight.[citation needed]
  • Has not looked a day older in some time.[citation needed]
  • Keeps his jacket sleeves down, even in August.

Trivia

  • The clock in the freight office reads 3:12. It has read 3:12 for a while. Bill has never asked anybody to fix it.
  • Bill is listed as the webmaster of this website. He has not been seen using a computer.[citation needed]
