Joe Kowalczyk is the last licensed driver at SLOPPY'S. He has the card to prove it, laminated, on a lanyard, and he will show you.
The lounge
Joe has not hauled freight since 2031. He can be found most hours in the vinyl recliner in the drivers' lounge, the one with the duct tape and the old pair of headphones hanging off the arm. He does not live in the lounge. He is just always there.[citation needed]
Joe is the lounge's philosopher. He will tell you what the road used to mean, usually while you are trying to find the restroom. He sincerely believes he is doing the Lord's work.[citation needed]
Margaret
Joe's truck is named Margaret. She is parked in the back lot, which is closed to the public, and she is sitting on four flat tires. Joe goes out and starts her every Sunday anyway. She has never once failed to turn over.
Trivia
- When the first toaster charged at SLOPPY'S, Joe walked out and knocked on the cab. Nobody answered. He left a coffee on its step out of habit. Some regulars still do.
- Holds the lounge record for most consecutive hours in one chair.[citation needed]
